Art Based Research:
Avant-Garde Gathering

PHD studies

The doctoral studies are focused on inventing new instruments of scientific research and their application in the analysis of works by artists of avant-garde groups and to a creation of a experimental artistic work on the border of virtual and real spaces. Modern digital media are intensively entering every sphere of life. Newly established museums are equipped with digital systems that support visitors by extending exploration capabilities and help researchers better understand structure and contents of a piece of art. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies are on the verge of a revolution that is already causing avalanche changes in both artistic and community spheres. Today we can create spaces and objects that previously were not available in reality and, even – interact with them. AR and VR technologies generate a fully artificial environment, including composed images, sounds, and sometimes touch, smell and sense of time, expanding research and cognitive abilities. They become catalysts of development of possibilities of interpreting and examining works of art at an unexplored level and a dimension unknown before.

Contemporary intermedia art is a continuation of the avant-garde ideas expressed in the language of our time. Pioneering, creating a world that does not imitate reality, looking for a new and distinct means of expression, focusing on community development, drawing inspiration from technological and ideological achievements – are its most important features. In all previous artistic avant-garde currents: cubism, surrealism or abstractionism, one can recognize/identify/find features which are present in digital art. Therefore, the project is not only to create operating systems but also to identify and develop diagonical forms and activities hiding under the terms related to the avant-garde (such as: metaphysics, concealment, surrealism, etc.) but also a kind of convergence of two distant artistic thoughts.

3D Scanning

One of the phases is to digital most important avant-garde artworks for building virtual space enviroments. This stage is focused on photogrametry of Tadeusz Kantor’s works, thanks to Cricoteka, and on works of Cracow Group works, such as Jonasz Stern and Janina Kraupe.
